Connecticut River Museum Exploring the beauty and wildlife on the Lower CT River

essex river cruise

We’ve been cruising on RiverQuest since February. We had a great time on the Winter Wildlife Eagle Cruises. The Deep River Eagles always seem to be a mystery, but they have settled into their new nest on Selden Island and we are counting the days to see signs of a hatchling. They saw mature and immature eagles, a peregrine falcon, mergansers, great cormorants, the first tree swallows and a seal or two.

Many paddlers also set a course for Choate Island (also known as Hog Island), part of the Crane Wildlife Refuge and managed by the Trustees of Reservations. The Refuge includes seven islands (Choate, Long, Dean, Dilly, Pine, Patterson, and Round) in the Essex River estuary. Guided kayak trips to Choate and around the Crane Wildlife Refuge can be booked through the Trustees and Essex River Basin Adventures (see below). We say this because public access here is hard to come by; however, that shouldn’t stop you from visiting this beautiful North Shore gem at least once.

About the Essex River Queen Boats

If you feel that an hour and a half (or 2) is too long for your child to handle, this may not be the trip for them. It is unfortunate to get stuck out on the water with an unhappy child. That being said, it's not uncommon for children to get off the boat having loved their time out on the water! So please, use your best discretion in this matter.

They were perched in trees, standing in the river, soaring high above the trees, eating their pray and soaring around with other eagles at play. It was like being involved in a national geographic show. 2024 Private Charters from Essex, CT on RiverQuest. A great way to have a happy, beautiful, intimate event! Nearby Perkins Marine also offers kayak launching and parking for $25, space permitting. Your best bet here is to go on a weekday, when marina use is lighter.

On the contrary, we encourage everyone to move around during the cruise to get different perspectives! Note that this means larger groups, especially on busier days, may not get to sit all together. Once you get on the water, the bay is your oyster—or, more appropriately, clam. Essex Bay, after all, is famous for its soft-shell or steamer clams, and you can expect to see plenty of clam diggers at work on the mud flats at low tide.

May – Memorial Weekend Sunset Cruises

Note that the restroom on board is down a small set of stairs, whereas the on shore one is not. Determine your length of cruise, capacity, and choose what type of cruise you want. We offer cruises with food onboard and also offer our Tidal Beach Clambakes.

Also be aware that the more exposed stretches of Essex Bay offer a lot of fetch, so monitor the wind and weather forecast before heading out. And naturally, it’s always wise to paddle with a partner and bring safety gear such as a personal locator beacon or cell phone in a waterproof case. The area is best suited for intermediate to advanced paddlers who are in good shape. We celebrated my parents 50th anniversary with 3 generations of family and it was absolutely perfect.

Both vessels are safe, comfortable, and easy to board, and are equipped with a PA system, iPod compatible sound system featuring Bose speakers, bar and restroom on board for your convenience. Discover the beauty and heritage of Essex, Massachusetts and the Great Marsh, as we cruise the pristine sheltered waters of the Essex River. The food was amazing, the boat terrific, the staff super friendly and knowledgeable — I would do it again in a heartbeat. They timed our trip so that low tide would create a sandbar in the middle of the broad, wide Essex River as it moved toward the greater water. They set up our tables, chairs, volleyball nets, etc. and we had a ball while awaiting our delicious food. Really, truly a perfect way to celebrate a family event.

Some people choose to bring their cameras to capture their favorite moments of the cruise, or maybe some binoculars. Depending on the weather, you may decide you want sunglasses, sunblock, or an extra jacket. We have plenty of FREE parking on site for passengers at all times. It is all very close, and there is a drop off area if necessary. Both of our vessels are equipped with an on board marine restroom, known as a "head"! There is also a restroom available on shore at the marina.

We host all types of events to big or small groups.

Surrounded by fine restaurants, antique shops, working museums, and cultural attractions, you'll cruise through spectacular views of scenic salt marshes with rich unique wildlife. The steam locomotive pulls vintage coaches through the quintessential New England towns of Deep River and Chester. A natural highlight is the undeveloped Selden Neck State Park, accessible only by boat.

If you forget something or would like to bring home a souvenir we have most anything you might want in our gift shop including hats, sweatshirts, knick knacks, snacks and gift certificates. We can host a unique, memorable event for up to 100 people; on a secluded tidal beach or on board our vessels. Catering options range from the traditional New England Clambake to the Beach Barbeque.

The Valley Railroad Company – operating the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat – has been serving the lower Connecticut River Valley since 1971. We welcome visitors from throughout the state of Connecticut, the New England region and all over the world to ride our railroad, relax aboard our riverboat and visit our unique facilities. If you like to fish, be sure to bring a rod, as striped bass—including some large ones—enter the river in June. Stripers can be taken on natural bait, trolled swimbaits, soft-plastic baits, and flies fished along the marsh banks, creek mouths, and channel edges. Remember that a Massachusetts saltwater fishing license is required.
